vr product photography

I've been a product photographer for many years. Am interested in providing vr product photography to my clients.
I'd like to start small and get a feel for it. Which means I'd like to try to get the new vr tools which fit well into my current system - which is a STILL dslr situation.

I shoot with a Nikon D1X, using Nikon capture and Nikon browser. I'm thinking about getting the kaiden manual turntable.

Can someone please explain how the process works and recommend a software to aid in the system flow and to help in merging the shots together as well as eliminating backgrounds?

My understanding is that I would first set up the product on the turntable which sits on a white background. Lighting set up would softboxes to have even, soft illumination (and possibly shooting from beneath with plexi). Then using the turntable, take multiple shots while manually moving the turntable (which has click in settings).

I know that the next step is to merge the images together and that it can be done in photoshop. But I'm not clear on the details. Is there a software that will make this a quick process and at what point does that software enter the work flow? Do I still use the Nikon Capture to use my laptop to capture the image? Will the images still go into Nikon Browser or will the VR software step in at that point? will the VR software aid in getting rid of the background as well?

Once the image is merged, does the client need a particular software/viewer for their site? Do the folks who visit the site need it as well?

I realized I've asked a lot of questions and I would certainly be grateful for any input. I'm getting clearer on the process but there are still alot of questions and I'd like to be clear before purchasing products

Please remember that I'm working with a STILL dslr to do this.

thanks - Jane

Hi Jane,

I think the best software for you to do this kind of VR images using a still SLR is this:

http://gardengnomesoftware.com/object2vr.php

I have used it for my work and is quite easy to work with, also, the publisher Thomas Rauscher is second to none regarding support for his clients.

Re: vr product photography

Wow. Thanks for recommending that software. It looks incredibly easy.

If anyone else has any feedback on the process - and perhaps a good product turntable for rotating the product - I'd love to hear it. It would be great if I didn't have to manually move the table to each notch. So far I'm leaning toward the manual kaiden.

Thanks again - very helpful!

Re: vr product photography

Hi Again Jane,

Sorry that I missed that point.
I can recommend what I use and what I am happy with it, so I go ahead and for the product turn table I recommend you the Seitz VR Drive Object Movie Drive:

Also the Seitz people are among the best regarding quality of their products and support service, really a top notch Swiss Quality.

Re: vr product photography

Hi Carlos - Thanks again. I think for now that turntable system is too expensive - although I love the idea of it automatically rotating through the stops while I shoot using my still dslr.

I have one more question if you don't mind.

I'm getting caught up on how to remove backgrounds from the shots. Its so labor intensive and the softwares used for merging the various shots do not aid in background removal. Would you mind describing your process for removing backgrounds? Hopefully there is an automated process other than clipping paths for each image. I know that I should shoot on white and use soft lighting to eliminate shadows - but it seems like it would be impossible to eliminate the turntable completely.

Again, thank you for your replies - very helpful.

Re: vr product photography

Jane,

If you have to change the backgrounds of your shots, it's a bit more difficult to do that with still images, this is an area where going with video will make your life easier.
Usually when I need to remove the background I shoot video instead because is much more easy to do that with video tools using a green background for the shooting.
You can use some batch filter in Photoshop to remove the background from the still images, but is a bit tricky...

Re: vr product photography

If the video software is that much better at doing background removal, couldn't you just put all the still frames on one linear video file (with lossless or no compression) and run that through the software? You can split out the resulting composited video back into individual frames if you want to.

Re: vr product photography

Yeah, that could be an idea, I don't know, I have tried that way once but gave up due to problems on the pixel size conversions between still images and video formats, the images always got distorted, it's a bit confusing, for example HDV 1050i pixels are not square to fill the width on the TV!!!

But with a little patience and a good 1080p video software it might be possible!

Re: vr product photography

Just an update. I ended up getting the Kaiden manual and it works great. Moves quite smoothly. Since I'm shooting with a Nikon D1X tethered to my mac laptop, the images take some time to upload so its no big deal to walk over and move the turntable since I have time to kill between each exposure.

I also got the garden gnome software (Ojbect VR). It is still in the beta process so there isn't alot of documentation and some bugs. It is very easy to use use - not as easy to get answers - but - I feel well worth the price.

Re: vr product photography

Hi Jane
Sorry i havent been on here for ages, and missed this entire conversation
http://www.quicktimevirtualreality.com/qtvr/objects/how-to-make-an-objec...
I made this tutorial a while back to show you how to make a very strong turntable (takes about 3 tonnes) for about £100 if you need a welder to help you or £20 if you make it 100% your self.

If you only want a small turntable that takes about 10KGs you can buy one of these
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90074483
The Lazy Susan by ikea (if the link doesnt work)

I spent about 2hrs going through all the pallets of them they had, trying to find one with the least bearing play, and got the perfect one for £5.

I have used dozens of programs including VR Worx, Gnome software etc etc and the best i have found is
http://www.flashloaded.com/flashcomponents/controlvr/
Takes a few mins to work it out, but once you have it working perfect it is great. You just add a flash SWF file to your web page, an XML file and the images and hey presto, you have a VR Object.

The flash SWF doesnt need to change for each site, as long as the XML file is put into the same folder it will work. I made 4 SWF files
- 480 x 640
- 640 x 480
- 600 x 800
- 800 x 600

And just pop them in as needed, and of course if i need to i can make a custom size for a project.
I hope this helps

Ian
