Wasserburg Hülshoff lies in the midst of the picturesque countryside of Havixbeck in the Münsterland, about 10 km west of Münster and easily reached by way of the A1 motorway (exit Münster Nord). The typical Münster appearance and atmosphere of the castle are rooted in a familly tradition dating back more than 500 years. The castle is of historic importance as the birthplace of the famous German writer of poetry and fiction, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797 - 1848).

The visitor will find here a typical Westphalian "Wasserburg", a castle surrounded by a lake. The earliest references to it can be found in documents of the 11th century, when it was the estate "Zum Hülshoff". In 1417 the castle was acquired by the writer's ancestors. The family residence, which was built in the years 1540 - 1545 as a complete Renaissance structure, has essentially been preserved till today.

The Droste Museum located on the ground floor of the castle gives visitors an impression of the life and customs of the Münsterland nobility at the time of the classicism and the Biedermeier.

There is an extensive, well-cultivated park, newly laid out on the basis of old plans, an ideal spot for visitors to stroll, relax and enjoy themselves. In spring, tulip and narcissi bloom, followed in summer by rhododendrons and azaleas, which recreate the atmosphere which once inspired the writer to many of her poems and stories.

In the castle cellars can be found the café-restaurant, where guests may wish to linger. These rooms, with their agreeable atmosphere, are the setting for receptions, weddings, family celebrations and conferences.
