Exotic lenses anyone ?
Hi,
I sold my D2X and went the other side of the hill for a 5D, fullframe just feels better, also the choice of lenses is now huge !
I gathered lots of convincing info regarding exotic primes for "traditional" photography with the 5D but just about nothing when it comes to our use. Wonder if anyone one here has experience in using the CZ distagons, Leica R or Zuikos (especially the wides) in panoramas for print or web use.
Any share of experience would be much appreciated as I'm about to commit myself for a few primes.

Re: Exotic lenses anyone ?
I'm in touch with Luca, but he's not fullframe so it's hard to tell for sure comparing apples with pears.
My reasoning is that if lenses weaken on the side/corners and that is where we stitch, there's got to be a viewable difference at some point and sharpening and blending doesn't invent image info. With higher rez (online/offline) coming it can only become more obvious.
I can't resolve (sic!) myself to buy a 15mm EF because from all I've seen it doesn't stand to Nikon's 10.5 for sharpness so I'm hunting elsewhere in the Leica/Zeiss/Zuiko court after shaving my 10,5 for action on 5D. and yes the 24-35mm range are on my list, up to 180mm for partial landscapes

And I thought the prime suspects pun was bad!
It might be that the 15mm EF has good and bad copies. I find mine compares very well with sample images from the 10.5mm. Here's an untouched JPEG as an example: http://ianjameswood.co.uk/ivrpa/2006-08-14_111611AM_41.JPG (4.5MB).
That's f10 on a tripod, though. Being a stickler for crisp images, I've not really tried it below f8.
For longer partials I've had excellent results from the 70-200mm f4L, but others have had not so good results - Max Lyon, for instance, has one that is consistently soft along one edge at 200mm.
24-35mm really seems to be the problem range.

many thanks for the link Ian

that's very likely, and since I started this thread I found a distagon 16 like new for less then a used 15EF ! I should be set for that focal length, now to find the right adapter for it.

yes for anything above 100mm Canon lenses have a worldclass reputation, but for anything below 35mm …

I'm experiencing a similar flaw with a 21mm where I have to vary focus distance to get either edge in sharpest focus, a very strange behaviour.
Re: Exotic lenses anyone ?
That should be a cracking lens!
I might start keeping a look out for something similar around 35mm.

Re: Exotic lenses anyone ?
Much to my surprise, I recently found out that I have a piece of photographic equipment that Luca doesn't have ;-)
The Sigma 8mm manual focus fisheye...

Re: Exotic lenses anyone ?
Luca Vascon would be the prime suspect, but he's not a forum member and doesn't have a 5D...
Anyway, for screen use and print use up to about 1500mm I stick with a 15mm fisheye, it's giving you an equirectangular image ~12,000x6,000px in size.
Something nice in the 24-35mm range would be good for really high res and/or partial panos, though.
