I'm considering a Sigma 8mm to use with a future dSLR and wanted to see some interactive images created with one.

The search tag in the Members Gallery is "Sigma 8mm EX fisheye". Does that exclude tags that just read "Sigma 8mm"?

Same question for "Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye" and "Nikkor 10.5"?

Thanx

Re: Member Galleries, Browse by tag

There is no 'similarity' intelligence in the tags system. So, if you make a typo, or use slightly different spelling entering tags, you will create a new 'category' in the 'browse by tag' pages. So the usefulness of these pages depends on how members use the 'autocomplete' functionality of the forms.

Having said that, a couple of weeks ago I did a sweep through all tags and merged a lot of very similar tags. So there should be one big category for Sigma 8mm and Nikkor 10.5 mm lenses, though I would not know their exact spelling by heart.

Here's a list of all tags used for 'equipment'.

During the "sweep" did you change the "Sigma 8mm" tags to "sigma 8mm EX fisheye" or the other way around.

I was wondering if just "Sigma 8mm" would be simpler.

Same for "Nikkor 10.5mm"

"Sigma 8mm" doesn't exist in the current list of tags, so Aldo must have changed it all to the longer version.

Doug, not sure if you remember, but just before Xmas, we had a major discussion about lens types for my new 5D http://ivrpa.org/node/740.

I still haven't bought my 8mm or 10.5mm as I'm looking on eBay (anywhere) for a good one of each in the UK, and they never turn up
http://photography.search.ebay.co.uk/8mm_Camera-Lenses_W0QQcatrefZC2QQfr...

I check this nearly every day, and unless i want to get a lens from Hong Kong, where i will pay import duty and VAT making it roughly £470 (They only cost £499 new here!!) then I'm waiting for a good second hand one.

Problem is since Xmas i have had some major work load on anyway (its Easter and I'm working), and haven't taken one commercial vr photograph at all. But I'm hoping to get this sorted after Easter as I have 2 bits of work booked in.

There was some great links and examples on that previous post by other members that showed comparisons of the lens types and the outcomes.

I think ill be going for the 8mm over the 10.5mm, as even though there is lost pixels with black from being too large, I love long exposure images, and to have the option of being able to take 2 hemispheres of long exposed images, is better for me than 3 or 4 with the 10.5mm. This helps prevent seams where headlight trails and motion blurs occur, but the 5D set to max resolutions, will still give me enough pixels to print at reasonable quality on a reasonable size canvas.

But at the cost of a cheep car, i will be waiting until i find a good second hand one. I bought the camera body as i use that all the time for studio work and other parts of my job, but i cant justify at the moment £500+ for one lens.

I may try one of these eBay sellers who will sneak it in with no VAT and TAX as a non commercial gift.

But we will see

Regards
Ian
