Work constructed by JOAQUIN BALAGUER in the constitutional period from 1974 to 1978. It is the most venerated religious monument of the Dominican Republic and a center of attention for much of Latin America. It is a very important place that Dominican’s identify as home to the patron saint of the country; The Virgin of Altagracia.
The present Basilica was inaugurated the 21 of January, 1971. The french architects who created it were; A. Dunover de Segonazc and Pierre Dupré. The basilica was constructed to replace to the old sanctuary built here in 1572.
