Bullet Time Photography
I spoke about this on the apple quick time vr forum a few months back in the conversation about Ikeas website, and would like to show you guys what i have been up to for the past few months.
http://quicktimevirtualreality.com/bullettime/
The 36 cameras are standard DSLR's but they have been sent away and internally modified by a specialist company, to remove the delay of between 0.01 - 0.5seconds depending on how they are feeling at the time down to 0.000000050 seconds from when the trigger is pressed and the image is taken. The trigger system is hand made by another specialist company who usually make satellite control systems.
EXCLUDING the cost of the cameras, the set up cost me more than a new BMW M3.
I'm still trying to work out which i should have bought, as im sure my lady would prefer the car rather than a house full of cameras.
The demos on the link are using 8 cameras only, as (you wont believe this) i don't have enough chargers to charge all the batteries at the same time lol. I think i may invest in power supply units.
Re: Bullet Time Photography
That looks like an impressive investment! Have you tried interpolating shots to get more smooth movements with something like RealViz Retimer? I know you have more cameras waiting, but it never hurts to be able to span more time and distance with the same number of cameras.
Re: Bullet Time Photography
Hi Ian,
Wow...cool concept...is this similar to how the MATRIX special effects were done ?
Looks Great....

Re: Bullet Time Photography
Hi Dennis, yep exactly the same procedure, just without the $50M squillion dollar budget, a crew of 100 men, and a studio the size of an aircraft hanger.
Not that I'm jealous or anything!!!! ;)

Yerp, we have been thinking of using some form of morphing software to try and "guess" the exposures in between the cameras, so we can achieve many more images without increasing the hardware costs.
I'm not sure its what i was really trying to achieve though, as I'm worried that I'm moving away from the actual technique i was trying to use. For example kokokaka cheated by using a moving camera on a rail and a lot of CGI when making their example for ikea http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/rooms_ideas/ckl/default.html
I'm not saying what Kokokaka have produced is poor in any way, far from it, it is quite amazing, and they have obviously perfected the technique.
But I'm looking for a few ideas that will be very creative, and only possible with this technique, anybody any ideas?
Regards
Ian

Ian,
How about some water being poured or confetti being thrown? Things frozen in mid air.

Thats a great idea,
I was at a wedding last weekend, and the same thing crossed my mind then, and also with autumn (and the fall for you americans :) i am really wanting to catch the leaves falling.
I am also looking at how how i can catch traffic on long exposure, across a bridge or something or down the side of the traffic kerb.
