A VR viewer for my iPhone in Q1, 2008? -- $100

My iPhone is great but currently it won't do panoramas. I want to put my money
where my big mouth is and offer $100 USD to the first party that develops a functional
spherical panorama viewer, that allows pan left/right and zoom in/out capabilities
in the first quarter of 2008. I hope others will join me in this "pledging" of
cash incentives to produce such a viewer for the Apple iPhone.

I don't want to wait any longer for a panorama viewer than necessary.

Maybe money talks?

Hello Michael, have you tryied contacting Prof. Helmut Dersch?
He made a vr applett(ptviewwerME) for the Nokia 6230i(3G) and
maybe with some 'tweaks/compiling' he can port it to the 1phone.
Anyways quicktime>

Re: A VR viewer for my iPhone in Q1, 2008? -- $100

In keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, I am prepared to donate $250 to UNICEF
if someone can do this before Macworld 2008. Any jail breakers out there?

In the same holiday spirit, I'll match Mike's offer.

My wish list includes a pano player for the Nokia N800.

Re: A VR viewer for my iPhone in Q1, 2008? -- $100

Great spirit guys. I am affraid that nothing is going to happen until Apple releases its SDK for this phone....and then some. I mean this hardware does not even support the most common technologies and APIs of our time. Your best bet right now is to make a pano2video movie and rip that with h.264 to a mpeg4 and play it stop and go...if the crippled Quicktime player on it will allow that....i dont know. It looks great on a desktop and works perfect going forward and a bit choppy going backwards with the arrow keys.
So far I got 4 mobile devices working for panos with immervision WM 5 on ppc, G2 on symbian sony, Kinoma on PalmW and Zodiac and PtviewerMe and Me2 on Java phones with 3d infrastucture. All that is missing now is flash phones...but none of them support full capabilities either, yet.

The other day I have read a research firms report on world wide mobile subscriptions that have reached the 3.3 billion mark. That's half the population of this world. Mind some people have 2 phones, but some countries have 100% penetration. Still impressive numbers. Unfortunately many different standards, so delivery will be a huge issue, but just imagine a unified standard on all phones? Mind boggling opportunities.

VRcheers,

Milko

Anyways QTVR-apple-iphone, must be a matter of weeks before they update the firmware
or release extra soft/SDK.

But then again, if it supports FP9 then your ready to go, right?
and don't forget google's streeview implementation.

Re: A VR viewer for my iPhone in Q1, 2008? -- $100

I've been viewing panoramas on my iPhone, the simple way;

I crop an equirectangular image to about 50% in height and divide it into six 480x320 images. I view these in the photoviewer on the iPhone. I've tried to find a way to remove the black bars between the flipping of the images but I'm not much of a techy.

Another possibility could be re-programming the cube-effect of the slideshow. Making it an inner-cube and removing the shading effect that darkens the cube-sides when turning.

[edit] I've posted a message on a popular iPhone forum (Hackint0sh) with a panoviewer request, you never know.....

Re: A VR viewer for my iPhone in Q1, 2008? -- $100

Marc,

The iPhone doesn't have Java, so Helmut's viewer can't be ported for any given definition of 'easy'. And Flash panoramas are a non-starter because it doesn't have Flash either... :-(

But the iPhone itself _does_ have a Java base inside, doesn't it? I thought the apps and such for iPod and iPhone were Java at heart.

No, they have objective C or C++ at heart, just like many - if not most - of your OS X apps.

Re: A VR viewer for my iPhone in Q1, 2008? -- $100

The PTViewerME works fine on a Nokia E61. The E61 has also WLAN, so it's possible to connect to free WiFi nodes for checking email, using VOIP and so on.
Got my Nokia E61 used on Ebay for 130 Euro (instead of paying 800 Euro for an iPhone here in Europe).

There is Flash Lite 3 for cell phones from Adobe, but Flash Lite 3 doesn't support panos in Flash 8 or 9 compiled with Pano2VR.
