Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

Hello,

Can anyone tell me if they know of a good, inexpensive electronic plug-in which will allow me to take out the bends in a fisheye and end up with a nice wide-angle shot?

Regards and thanks,

Stuart

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

Stuart,

I have been searching all week for the same thing!
I am on the verge of buying another lens because I can not straighten it up.

Thanks!
Dana

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

What are you using to stitch with?
PTgui can do this easy.

Or REALVIZ Stitcher...

Or if it's a Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 Nikon Capture NX

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

All I am trying to do is exactly as explained ... to change images taken with a fisheye into images that look like they were taken with a wide angle ...

Hans, you're the expert around here, please (if you have the time), would you explain how I can 'unbend' individual images using PTGui ...

And for anyone asking, Proxel doesn't with the Intel Macs ... despite their website saying it does (followed by an email from the designer saying 'yes, sorry, it doesn't and we know about it').

Hans? Over to you ...

Regards and grateful thanks,

Stuart

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

there is a intel mac friendly CS3 version of helmut dersch's pano-tools plugin here -

http://www.kekus.com/download/

the adjust plugin will perform the kind of defishing you want, figuring out the proper setting can be a bit tricky though -

here is an example nikon 10.5mm fisheye (on a D70) defished (+ levels, etc in PS) in this manner, and the original on the right -

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

i saved this image from an old post on the realviz stitcher forums originally by jim scott, (i think) he created this diagram as well - the original post is no longer on line unfortunately, as it included a more detailed explanation, but this should be a good starting point for figuring out the settings for defishing your camera/lens combo using panotools adjust, these settings were originally for the 10.5mm Nikkor on a D70 as i recall, and i have been able to easily update them for D200, etc

set up a photoshop droplet with the defishing action set as below, (you will prob want to change at least the height & width) and you are in business -

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

Thanks everyone for rushing to my aid!

I'll try and upload and image later but am away from homebase for the time being.

I have already tried using DxO and Proxel ... the end result is thus:

1 x image (not for stitching) taken on a Canon 5D with a 17mm lens. Result required is 1 x image (not cropped), the same physical size as before bit with horziontal and vertical as straight as possible.

Hans has already earned himself a medal by helping me on the PanoGroups site and I'll give his wizard suggestion a go later on.

Thanks again,

Stuart

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

Sam, many thanks but I'm using PTGui.

Dana, I'm on a Mac so it won't work.

Still haven't found anything that works ... PTGui simply doesn't defish. It only wants to enlarge or reduce the image, no mater how many 0,01's I insert into a or b.

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

Stuart,

Try Ken Turkowski's DeFish (for the Mac). It's quite inexpensive (free, actually).

Re: Fisheye to Wide Angle converter ...

Thanks Scott but it's a nightmare. It won't keeps cropping the outsides of the image no matter what FOV I put into it.

One day, someone will invent a quick and easy to use: lens 'mm' in/lens 'mm' out - a one-click converter that doesn't require too much brain power (and for Mac).
