Carhenge
Carhenge is located in the western Nebraska panhandle region just north of the town of Alliance. It is a replica of the famous megalithic ruin Stonehenge in southern England.
The idea of creating this unique car sculpture belongs to Nebraska resident Jim Reinders. Reinders studied the design and purpose of Stonehenge while a resident of England. At a family gathering in 1982 following the death of Jim's father, it was decided to to build a memorial to Jim's father so the idea of Carhenge was developed.
Thirty-five family members gathered five years later to create the memorial. Carhenge was created in six days. A dedication was held on the Summer Solstice of 1987. Carhenge consists of thirty-eight vintage American automobiles in a circle 96 feet in diameter. The dominate car displayed when the image is first opened ia a 1962 Cadillac.
