This talk explores how virtual reality can enable indigenous communities to tell their own stories, blending cultural narratives with cutting-edge technology. Using examples from Awavena, the Yirrkala community in Northern Australia, and a Navajo collaboration, the discussion covers both creative and technical aspects.
Topics include the significance of place, contrasting approaches to capturing built versus living heritage, and the integration of dreams into storytelling. Technical insights will highlight laser scanning, 360-degree filming, and photogrammetry as powerful tools for preserving and sharing indigenous experiences through immersive media.
The presentation will run about an hour with a 1/2-hour Q&A period afterward.
