Is there any great advantage in using traditional DSLR cameras as apposed to the new 360 cameras Ricoh and Samsung. In particular Just for Google Street view and maps use.
I have been trying to find reviews with comparisons of quality etc without any luck
February 18, 2017 at 8:48 pm #12150a DSLR or mirrorless body with a good lens will have much better image quality vs theta or other one shot cameras, but comparing a dual camera/lens device that costs under $400 total vs a $1k+ DSLR (or mirrorless) body & $300+ fisheye lens is not exactly a fair or even comparison, small one shot 360 degree spherical cameras are extremely convenient and very useful for some situations, but larger image sensor are of DSLR + higher quality lens will always beat the quality of an all in one device costing 1/10 of DSLR & lens, an all in one 360 cam that competed w DSLR quality would basically cost as much as 2 dslr rigs
see these examples of DSLR vs all in one 360 cameras

July 9, 2017 at 6:05 am #14225Three useful very examples Sam. They really show the expected differences. I think its easy to make a case for having a one shot camera in your pocket for emergencies or places that would not allow a tripod to be used.

September 26, 2019 at 6:23 pm #22907I work at a University and we have evaluated many different models of 360 Cameras. My favorite is the Go pro fusion. The quality of the pictures, the price point, the convenience, the size — all of these are real pluses in my book. When a faculty member wants to take a 360 camera abroad for a research trip, I recommend the go pro fusion.
